Experiencing Your Environment through CONservation: A summer Science Institute for teens
Students can participate in an institute at Jennings Environmental Education Center (June 22-25) and/or Ohiopyle State Park (April 4, June 17-19). Both are centered around the theme “Conservation in a Changing Climate.”
Students will investigate what interests them about ecosystem monitoring and conservation in relation to climate change, which may include:
Jennings Environmental Education Center, Slippery Rock, PA (Butler County): June 22 – 25
Ohiopyle State Park, Ohiopyle, PA (Fayette County): April 4 (Orientation) and June 17-19 (Institute)
9:00 am – 4:30 pm each day (please note: this is a day institute only – there are no residential facilities or overnights)
Students entering 9th through 12th grades, as well as graduating seniors.
Either Institute: $207.50 (includes 2 college credits from Westminster College)
Day 1: Discovering the park and the issues, conducting a sample study, choosing a research focus
Day 2: Designing and starting investigations, recreational activity (such as kayaking)
Day 3: Conducting investigations, career and higher education activities, analyzing data
Day 4: Recreational activity (such as orienteering), preparing data and presentations, presenting findings to peers and professionals
Students should bring a water bottle each day. Snacks and water are provided.
Lunch is provided at the OHIOPYLE INSTITUTE (all days) and one day at the Jennings institute. Students must bring lunch for three days of the Jennings institute.
Lightweight long pants, short or long sleeved shirts, sturdy close-toed shoes, and sunscreen are essential for EYE Con campers. Students should also considering bringing a hat and bug spray.
